Real Room: Aqua Woodsy Boy’s Nursery

I’m super excited to share this beautiful nursery with you.  Cate of the craft blog See Cate Create, designed this fabulous nursery for her newest arrival.  Of course, this crafty mom made most of the decor items herself!

The inspiration for the entire nursery was the vinyl wall decal from designedDESIGNER’s etsy shop.  Large scale decals like this can become simple, elegant, custom wall murals, yet they are very affordable.  They can also be removed rather easily when you’re ready to redecorate.

Cate made the crib quilt using a bath towel, some polar fleece and scrap fabric.  The design mimics the mural on the wall.   She also block printed the bird pillow that sits in the crib.

One of the most fun details in the room is the pair of white mounted antlers, which tie in beautifully to the overall design scheme.

All these fun little details were also handmade by Cate and she has tutorials for some of them on her blog.

DIY leaf lamp- made out of polar fleece and an old lamp shade
Stuffed Owl- created out of a hand towel and scrap fabric and couldn’t be cuter!
Fabric Wall Art- follow the link for a tutorial on how to make this gorgeous custom artwork.
Alphabet Pillow- follow the link for step-by-step instructions to create your own!

See the inspiration for the room and the before of the room in Cate’s “Not So Baby-ish” Nursery Plans post and be sure to visit her blog for lots of amazing craft ideas with easy to follow instructions.  Thanks so much Cate for sharing the photos and creative ideas in your beautiful nursery!

My Modern Nursery #23: Babies R Us

I’ve shopped at Babies R Us for utilitarian items from time to time, but one of my main reasons for creating buymodernbaby is to show people all the great products that are available in the marketplace so they don’t think that the offerings at big box stores are their only choices.

Over the years, I have noticed that Babies R Us started carrying some of the brands that I enjoy so I wondered if it was finally possible to create a Modern Nursery using just the items that you could add to your Babies R Us registry.  I knew that this would be a challenge.  Take a look at what I came up with.  Take the challenge yourself and see if you can do better.

Real Room: EJ’s Rockin’ Woodland

I got scooped on this room by ohdeedoh, but in case you didn’t see it or if you want to know more, I’ve got the photos and details right here.

The nursery Krissy Purcell designed for her daughter totally rocks!  From the bold orange wall to the music posters, this is not your typical owl and woodland themed nursery.

The paint colors she used are Polar White and Kumquat from Behr.  The crib is the ever popular Baby Mod Olivia model from Walmart and the bookcase is the universal Ikea Expedit (I have one in my son’s room too).

The green rug and the dresser are also from Ikea.  I love the way the Fisher Price Soothe N Play Bouncer – Woodland Animals really works in this room.  The colors look like they are custom for the space and I’m all about spending less than $30 on a bouncer since you only use it for a couple months.

The poster above the changing table is “The Get Up Kids” show poster purchased from  The colors work perfectly.

The Expedit can be styled an infinite number of ways and this one looks fantastic.  The
storage bins
are from the Land of Nod and the custom ribbon decoration was added.

How adorable are these stuffed toys waiting for baby in the crib?!  You can find the fox on etsy from SleepyKing and the owl is from Lambs & Ivy.  The bedding is a discontinued J.J. Cole set called Green Vines.

The rest of the nursery is filled with beautiful little details like the growth chart decal from SingleStoneStudios.  The owl storage bin from 3 sprouts is a great storage solution for a child’s room, and the print from Belle and Boo is one of my very favorite items in the room!  It is so sweet, and the little stuffed carrot in front makes it all just too precious!  Top that off with a few more music posters and you know Krissy’s little girl is going to rock the playground in her little vans!

Krissy, thanks so much for letting me share this tour of your awesome nursery!  It’s filled with so much fun and personality.  I’m sure people will be using it as inspiration for their own spaces.

Real Room: Retro Rockets and Robots

It’s sometimes difficult to achieve a modern aesthetic on a modest budget, but April refused to sacrifice style in this retro nursery she designed for her third son.  You can’t help but be inspired by her creative solutions!

This nursery also functions as a guest space thanks to the trundle daybed from Ikea.  April saved money on a rug by using a soft and shaggy bath mat from Target.  I love how the little Ikea wagon adds a pop of color and accents the blue in the bedding!  The robot decals over the daybed were colorful stickers that April sprayed white and arranged for contrast on the gray wall.  This project only cost $5!

The bedding is DwellStudio for Target’s Space Crib Set and April picked up the dresser, mirror and end table on craigslist for just $50.  With a little paint, these pieces have a fresh clean look that will function for a long time.  April also painted the little robot canvas on the right using extra paint from the mural wall.  Too cute!

April created the mod mural herself and the design will transition really well as the baby grows up.

This art wall located over the changing table is an inexpensive arrangement of Ikea and Walmart frames.  The UFO and the orange robot are works of art by the baby’s older brothers– so sweet and personal!

Instead of a mobile, April installed this IQ lamp over the crib. Being right by the rocking chair, the lamp will also be perfect as a bedtime reading lamp.  I love when things do double duty.  The pillow case on the rocker was made by April’s great-grandmother and she drew the robot outline on it with a white fabric pen.  It looks teriffic!

I am also super impressed with this DIY lamp reno.

Without the expense of replacing the outdated fixture, April totally achieved a spacey, retro look!

The room was finished off with lots of fun and colorful accessories that enhance the look she was going for.

April made the little red robot doll herself and a friend knit the funky little “ugly doll” for the nursery.

April, you did a fabulous job putting this room together for your upcoming new arrival.  I can tell he is awaited with great love and excitement.  Thank you so much for sharing his room and all your fun and creative ideas with us.

My Modern Nursery #22: Bright and Bold

My inspiration for this nursery is the Confetti Mobile from Frazier & Wing. The colors really excited me and while I could have taken this inspiration in many different directions, I love how this combo turned out. Know anyone who is expecting? 2- Argington Sahara Crib– $685

Real Room: Conrad’s Modern Nursery

I am so excited to show you the fabulous nursery Allison Ballenger designed for her son.  It is modern, elegant and a perfectly fantastic space to care for and play with her newborn, Conrad!

The inspiration for this room was the orange, chocolate brown and cream bedding from Urban Crawl.

The crib and dresser are part of Babyletto’s Modo collection, and to the right of the crib is one of my favorite decorative accessories, the P’Kolino Clothes Tree.

I love how the area next to the window was decorated with the little bookshelf, framed photo and the adorable dog tail hooks from Ikea (if you want to find these now you’ll have to try ebay).  The saying above the doggies reads, “snips and snails and puppy dog tails, that’s what little boys are made of…”! So cute and so perfect.  The rocker in the reading nook is from Carolina Cottage and the nook was personalized with the simple monogram wall decal and chocolate brown cushion.

The Uglydoll display is a fun way to decorate this wall space. I love the little orange dangling giraffe and notice the Ekorre Rocking Moose from Ikea.  This moose comes in natural and red  but they custom painted it to match!  The moose is no longer coming up on Ikea’s website, but we saw a few there last weekend so maybe if you hurry you can still pick one up!

The light fixture is very cool– the Hangin’ Around Lamp from The Land of Nod, and you can take your pick of round zebra rugs like the one in this room at

The canvases over the changing table are hand painted and a believe I spy an Oeuf bouncer on the ground to the left of that.  Talk about coordination!

Allison, you did an amazing job decorating this room for you sweet little guy!  The room is personal, creative and relaxing with a dash of color and fun.  Thank you so much for allowing us to “tour” this gorgeous space and congratulations on your beautiful baby boy 🙂

Real Room: Modern Owl Themed Nursery

I love it when I find great examples of the products featured on buymodernbaby used in real nurseries.  I was so excited when I saw the room Maygan designed for her little boy.  She explains her design process saying, “For our son’s nursery I wanted to create a fun, creative space that was warm and modern. I stumbled upon the wonderful bedding, fell in love, and the rest of the nursery took shape.”

The bedding is Silly Owl from Litto Kids and you can see how this is the basis for the rest of the design choices.  The dresser and crib are from DwellStudio for Target’s Silver Lake Collection.

This is my favorite view of the room.  I love the wall decal growth chart from Willow Creek Signs’s etsy shop.  I have featured wall decal growth charts before and this one is perfect in this room!  I also adore the little owls up on the display shelves (which are from Target).

The opposite side of the room features Maygan’s baby clothes framed in shadow boxes as well as a painting done by her sister to highlight the design in the crib bedding.  Personal touches like this make the room part of your home and part of your family and history.

Here I have to mention the beautiful maternity photos.  Maygan made the frames for those photos herself and they make a dramatic statement.

I like to use the crib blanket over the rocker as well and the little owl blanket looks like the perfect lovey!

Finally, the mobile tops off the owl and the color theme perfectly.  Maygan made this herself!  One of the owls on the shelf above the wall decals is a larger stuffed version of the mobile owls– also handmade by Maygan.

You can see more of Maygan’s creative work (she’s a graphic designer) at  Thanks so much Maygan for letting us “visit” this inspiring nursery!
