Now do we want that groundhog to see his shadow or not? I can never remember, but whichever it is, I hope he brings tiding of an impending spring. It doesn’t matter much to me personally- the weather in South Florida is beautiful all winter- but I’m sure that those of you in snowy climates are ready for a little extra sunshine!
Considering our fascination with small, furry mammals, and the popularity of foxes, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits and even hedgehogs, it seems that the groundhog kinda gets forgotten, with the exception of today. Considering he has his own holiday, you might expect to see all kinds of groundhog products and merchandise. This just isn’t the case. For example, I searched groundhog on etsy handmade last week, and got 102 results. I got 634 for chipmunk, 3,275 for hedgehog, 6,297 for squirrel, 7,665 for fox and 25,927 for rabbit. What does everyone have against the groundhog?!
Anyhow, I did find a lovely brand-new book called “Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox” by Susan Blackaby.
It’s a charming story about a clever groundhog who outsmarts and then befriends a hungry fox. Maybe Brownie will help us open our hearts to the too often overlooked and under-loved groundhog. Happy Groundhog Day!
