Real Room Tour: Jessica’s Baby Boy #2 All Done!

We saw Jessica’s nursery board a few weeks ago, and today she’s giving us the grand tour of the completed space!

Planning our second nursery for our baby boy who is expected any day now was very different than the first time around. This time it was all about making the room practical, something he could grow into and something that was easy to keep clean and organized. I was really surprised at how quickly our older child needed a “big boy room” and was thankful that his room was easy to transition that way. While I love a few very babyish touches and subtle themes can be nice, they can definitely limit you when it comes time for your toddler to transition to a bigger bed and when it’s time to incorporate his or her interests.

I think I struck a nice balance between having a modern room that feels like it’s for a baby and a room that will grow with our son.

I’ve been inspired by a lot of the gorgeous black and white nurseries I’ve seen around lately, but knew that I wanted color this time around.

I found a few key pieces like the cloud garland and the pillows from Juniper Wilde and allowed myself the freedom to build the room simply using things I loved. I’m usually more of a planner than that, but this time, I think it worked out well.

The room is a peaceful, calming and serene space with some fun playful touches. I love the industrial and modern style pieces that we’ve incorporated and can’t wait to raise our son here.

My Modern Nursery #82: Jessica’s Nursery for Baby #2!

As a second-time mom expecting baby boy number two in early June, I knew that I wanted to come up with a beautiful nursery design again. But this time, the focus was on simple, modern design with strong organization and a very comfortable chair.

I now know how quickly children grow and realize that I’ll be transitioning baby into a big boy bed sooner than I can imagine. I chose a color palette of a soft teal/aqua paired with all sorts of neutrals. Black, white and grey make up most of our accent colors, but I’m adding a bit of yellow as well. I think I’ll be able to easily create a big-boy room in a year or two with this base. After changing the room design multiple times, I went back to my roots. I love clean modern design with just a touch of whimsy. Fun throw pillows and a great mobile add just the right amount of sweetness to an otherwise industrial modern style room.

The DwellStudio Myles glider was a steal at $350 on Craigslist including the ottoman. I found it new from a local boutique children’s shop called Creative Kid Stuff. I made this room a budget friendly room by repurposing our crib with a fresh coat of paint on the bottom, using a lot of standout IKEA pieces and finding fun inexpensive wall art.

Modern Crib Bedding at Target

Target is a great place for almost all home items. I can happily get lost in the home section for hours. But honestly, the kid and baby sections are often lacking in good modern decor for the nursery or toddler bedroom. Particularly in store, I have a hard time finding anything that would work for our modern aesthetic in the nursery or toddler room.

With that being said, I was excited to come across several modern crib bedding sets on Target.com recently, all under $140 and most under $100.

Bananfish Poppy set 2

Bananafish Poppy crib set ($99.99)

Black and white dots. Need I say more? The bold flowers mixed with the clean look of black and white makes this set a favorite of mine. While I do love the set, the less than modern crib is a turn-off and I would love to see this on my current favorite budget-friendly crib, the Babyletto Hudson.

Room 365 Globetrotter set

Room 365 Globetrotter crib set ($69.99)

I have a thing for airplanes. This set is simple yet bold, exactly what I love in a bedding set for a child.

Birds and flowers crib set ($99)

This sweet, yet still very modern, set features soft pink birds and flowers mixed with bold black making this set a stand out for me.

First Trike crib set ($99)

Bicycle, bicycle, I want to ride my bicycle. I love the clean bicycle print in fun color palette of orange, blue and beige.

Bananafish Linden

Bananafish Linden crib set ($99.99)

With three simple patterns, this blue, yellow and grey set is fun and simple.

Hot air balloon

Room 365 Hot Air Balloon crib set ($79.99)

Hot air balloons plus orange dots plus chevron is a winning combination. This set could be playful and sweet in any nursery.

Bacati Baby and Me Giraffe set ($139.99)

The cute giraffe print plus a bold dot pattern make this a fun modern set.

Most of these sets are not available in store but are available online. Would you design your nursery around one of these crib bedding sets? Which is your favorite?

Etsy find: Math and Science Inspired Nursery Art from Halfpence Design

Every once in a while I come across something a bit different in the nursery art category. I was excited when I first learned about Halfpence Design and their modern math and science inspired wall art. From 8×10 inch art prints to large stretched canvas wall art, this Etsy shop offers fun and playful art with a math and science twist, something you may not see very often when it comes to nursery design.

Most of these prints come in several size options so you can choose a smaller print for a gallery wall or a large print to stand alone.

Etsy Find: Interactive Growth Charts and Modern Art Prints by PaperRamma

With so many sweet growth chart options out there, it can be hard to decide which one is right for your child and your decor style.

I recently came across PaperRamma on Etsy and instantly fell in love with their beautiful nursery art prints and even more in love with their interactive growth charts in several colors and styles.

The growth chart ($55) gets filled out as your child grows. You can record more than your child’s height on this unique option.

There is a spot for all kinds of memories. Everything from milestones to a map for recording baby’s travels to specifics like birth date and eye color. This growth chart is like a baby book but it’s put on display in a lovely way.

The chart is customizable. You can pick the colors, customize with your child’s name, pick a world or US map and can pick almost anything to put at the top for design from flowers to a graphic that fits your nursery decor.

And while the growth charts definitely had my eye, I couldn’t help but share the Golden Slumbers Art print duo ($35). These prints come in the color of your choice and would make a lovely set above a crib. After all, what beats a Beatles quote?

And the Somewhere Over the Rainbow set ($52) would cover a larger wall as the rainbow moves from the first print through the second and into the third.

Another favorite option is the Here Comes the Sun set of two ($35).

And if none of these quite work for your room, one of the other art options from PaperRamma might just do the trick.

Etsy Finds: Interactive Floor Play Mats for Babies and Toddlers

Before baby can walk, floor mats work great to keep younger children entertained. But even after walking begins, these interactive floor mats could easily transition from baby to toddler with a few new accessories. From soft quilted play mats to vinyl custom options, here are a few of our favorite play mats for young children.

Felt play mat from Fancy Fancy Handmade on Etsy ($40) allows children to move buildings and roads around to create a new play option every day.

Flip Mat-transportation or zoo editions by Mama May I ($35) on Etsy even come with soft play animals and vehicles for children. Mama May I offers several fun flip mat options.

The large I am Here custom play mat from Board Stiff on Etsy ($75) is a washable vinyl play mat designed specifically for you. Include your street names or pick a city or neighborhood you love. Your kids will quickly learn the names of your favorite streets.

The play/nap quilt from Wehlbuilt Concepts on Etsy comes with two wooden cars, perfect for toddlers and is soft enough for even very young babies.

Gold Foil Prints for the Nursery

Gold foil printing is all the rage on business cards and wedding invitations these days. And we’re seeing more and more gold in parties and weddings. But why not add gold foil printing to the nursery too?

Gold is a lovely neutral that would work well with almost any nursery color palette. Today we’re sharing a rundown of some of our favorite gold foil prints for the modern nursery.

Night night darling boy print ($20) or Night night sweet girl print ($20) by Lara Casey. These are made for a nursery and are so sweet, simple and perfect. I would love to see this above the crib in a simple neutral nursery.

Be Brave print ($10) by Charm and Gumption on Etsy. This simple statement says so much.

Oh Deer print ($35) by Uh Oh Deer on Etsy. This simple yet beautiful deer print is one of very few gold foil prints without text.

Happiness is made for you print ($47) by Veronika on Etsy.

Monogram print ($18) by Miss Poppy Designs. So many nurseries are incorporating monograms and initials on gallery walls. This print would be a nice addition to a classy gallery wall.

You are my greatest adventure print ($20) by B is for Bonnie on Etsy.  Such a true sentiment for a parent of a new baby.

Home is where the heart is inch print ($45) by Rocket Ink on Etsy.  Available in several different states, this cute print would be great in a travel themed nursery or as an addition to an eclectic gallery wall.

Naps fix everything print ($24) by Honey and Fitz on Etsy . This print is pure truth!
