Justina Blakeney at Pottery Barn Kids

The nursery sets from Pottery Barn Kids usually run a little too mainstream for my tastes, but this collection from Justina Blakeney is a surprise in the very best way. The Jungalino Baby Bedding is the centerpiece of the nursery set. The wonderful collection of colors and patterns includes a quilt, fitted sheet, bumper and decorative pillow.

I’m feeling the Geo Storage Basket with the bedding or anyplace in your home really. $80

I’m also really excited about the Felted Llama Mobiles as llamas are favorites at my house. $60

With the collection or on its own, the Justina Blakeney Sticks Activity Gym is a winning design. $127

Finish off the nursery design with the Ceramic Turtle Nightlight. $70

And if you want that Justina Blakeney flavor on the go, consider the Tigress Diaper Bag. It kinda reminds me of some bedding my parent had back in the 70s, and I mean that in a good way. $150

Shop this special collection while you can and check out the rest of it at potterybarnkids.com.

JuJuBe Hobobe Tokidoki Space Place

JuJuBe Hobobe Tokidoki Space Place
Diaper bag great, Ju-Ju-Be, has launched another collaboration with famed designer Tokidoki that is out of this world! Space Place is the name of the print, and it is packed full of characters and objects exploring outer realms. We were sent the Hobobe Diaper Bag in the Space Place print to put to the test and review for you.

This is my first time trying out a diaper bag from Ju-Ju-Be. They have a massive fan base and now I can tell it’s for a good reason. The quality is amazing and I have been very impressed. Quality stitching, detailed metal (no plastic!) hardware, and comfortable additions abound.

It’s truly the little things that count, and Ju-Ju-Be has thought of all of them. I’m embarrassed to say that I haven’t had one of their bags before and I have definitely been missing out on this quality. Everything from the large, exterior Mommy Pocket (zippers, interior organization pockets), stretchy key clip, soft-lined pocket perfect for your phone and sunglasses, and two exterior insulated bottle pockets make this bag a breeze to find and protect your personal items. An Agion treatment protects the liner by inhibiting the growth of odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew. Bonus — it’s all machine washable and can air dry!

The inside of the bag is lined in their signature, detailed Tokidoki print in a light color, which makes it easy to locate your toys and clothes. Plenty of pockets and zippered areas allow for easy organization, which is truly appreciated and makes a bag of this small-medium size feel even more spacious. There is a place for everything!

The bag of the bag has an exterior opening for the Tokidoki changing pad, featuring the detailed print on a soft, wipe-able fabric.

The Hobobe is a style of diaper bag from Ju-Ju-Be that is perfect for quick trips and streamlined excursions. I have absolutely loved this bag as a go-to for stroller outings, as a bag for my infant’s gear when he is with a sitter, and for using for both of my boys for toys and activities when in the car or in public. The adjustable strap has a shoulder pad that is grippy and makes it stay even on my bare shoulders in the Florida heat!

I am excited to have been given the opportunity to review this product and I will be checking out even more prints in larger Ju-Ju-Be diaper bags in the future!

Your Modern Baby Registry: Sponsored by Babylist

what you need to travel with baby registery must-haves

We’ve already covered your registry basics for your newborns and what to register for to equip the nursery, so the final list for you to consider for your baby registry is the travel gear. Travel can mean everything from a trip out to the grocery store or a trip around the world. These are all the things you may need to get around safely and comfortably with your little one in order of importance.

Your first basic travel necessity whether you’re going out to the park or a cross-country flight is a diaper bag. Even if you’re going to carry your baby in your arms or if they’re already walking, you’ll need a way to hold the diapers, wipes, pacifiers, snacks, change of clothes etc… All those little things that you and your child rely on are going to have to come with you when you leave the house. You may find one bag that works for you for all occasions, you may discover that you need different sized bags for trips of varying lengths of time, or you may even want diaper bags to coordinate with whatever outfit you’re wearing. At a minimum, you’ll need one. At our house I had one and my husband had his own. This worked perfectly for us but you’ll figure out what works for you. Babylist has a great guide, How to Choose a Diaper Bag, that can help you get started.

The next thing I highly recommend you have with you when you leave the house is a baby carrier. You can’t always carry baby in your arms– sometimes you just need your hands free– and not every baby will be content to sit in their car seat or stroller all the time. A carrier keeps baby moving with you while being an easy way for you to get around and still keep them close and secure. We don’t cover carriers here on the blog because it’s not just about what they look like and which is the most modern, it’s about finding the carrier that’s most comfortable and easy for you to use. Babylist has their list of The Best Baby Carriers of 2015, which is a great place to start your search for the perfect carrier. You may want a few different styles for different occasions or to better accommodate your child as they grow.

Pictured: Boba 4G Baby Carrier

The next item to be sure to have on your registry is the all-important stroller. I put this after a carrier, but whenever you’re on the move and want a break from carrying your little one– after all, they might get too heavy for you before they start walking– you’re going to want a stroller. Choosing your stroller might be one of the most difficult registry choices you’ll have to make. You have to consider the features you need that will support your lifestyle, the way you travel, where you go, how many children you have, etc.. Sometimes covering all your needs requires more than one stroller. We had one that worked perfectly well for us for both our children, but then I’m the only person I know who only had just one stroller, so that may be something to think about. Of course, Babylist has a guide for The Best Strollers of 2015 that includes a lot of advice about what to look for in your ideal stroller(s) and some parent favorites.

armadillo mamas and papas

If your travels take you away overnight or even if you’re staying at someone else’s house through naptime, I highly recommend a travel crib. There are so many great travel cribs that are easy to set up, easy to transport, and can become baby’s safe and comfortable home away from home. Babylist’s guide to The Best Playards of 2015 includes most of my favorite travel cribs. Just pick the one that you like best!

BABYBJORN Travel Crib Light

Once you’ve got the travel basics, there are tons of additional accessories and items that might make your trips easier. Babylist’s Ultimate Stroller Accessories Guide can give you an idea of what else is out there for travel, and you can decide what you think you might need. Remember that less is more, especially when it comes to traveling and packing, so don’t just buy everything on the list. Carefully pick what makes sense for the traveling that you do. If you’re going to walk around in the rain, by all means, get a rain cover for your stroller. We picked up a cup holder to add to our stroller because it was easier than carrying our own drinks around.

So in order of importance, these are the items that will make traveling with baby a breeze…

Skip Hop Duet Diaper Bag Review

Our coverage of Skip Hop products and designs is extensive, and we are big fans here at BuyModernBaby. From toddler backpacks and feeding gear to nursery bedding and their new layette, they truly have something for every family. Their diaper bag selections have always been wildly popular among moms of all income levels because they are not only stylish and affordable, but their functionality is outstanding and their prints and patterns are on trend. Skip Hop recently added several new styles and designs to their changing bags collection, and we are excited to review the Duet 2-in-1 Diaper Bag for you today. I believe this bag adds style and luxury to the Skip Hop line and I love this new concept for them.

Skip Hop Duet Diaper Bag

My son is three years old, and while he’s potty training, we have been toting around extra changes of clothes, Pull-Ups, swim diapers, underwear, and the works. It’s as if this age gives us the last hurrah before not needing a “diaper” bag any more. Mind you, I was the girl carrying diaper bags even pre-child because I loved the pockets and organizational capabilities! Nothing beats a diaper bag as a beach tote, pool bag, car trip bag… Name an occasion and I can give you a reason that a diaper bag will enhance your lifestyle. I know, I’m a bit obsessed.

Skip Hop Duet Diaper Bag 2-in-1

I have been using the new Skip Hop Duet 2-in-1 Diaper Bag for the past several weeks, and I have been incredibly impressed with its range of practical, professional, and personal uses. The Duet is truly two bags in one as the exterior is a sleek, chic, faux-leather tote, and the interior consists of a removable organizer that can be worn alone as a crossbody bag.

Skip Hop Duet Diaper Bag loaded up

It works great for those days when my son doesn’t want to carry his own items; I can throw everything in the Tote and use the Crossbody comfortably.

Skip Hop Duet Diaper Bag Details

Skip Hop diaper bags are known for being organizational workhorses. The Duet 2-in-1 contains seven different pockets for all of your storage needs. The Crossbody Bag includes four large exterior pockets and two interior pockets sized well for bottles, diapers, wipes, and more. A changing pad is included and folds up nicely into one pocket. An exterior, zipped pocket is perfect for immediate needs such as your cell phone, lip balm, or other small items.

Skip Hop Duet Diaper Bag Front Detail

The texture on the front of the Tote is sophisticated and stylish, bringing an air of class to the structured bag. Silver studs complement the bottom while keeping the bag off of the ground.

Skip Hop Duet Diaper Bag Innovative Turnlock

The innovative turnlock on each side secures the Crossbody Bag to the Tote while making it quick and easy to remove when needed. The Crossbody zips closed and the Tote has a clip to draw in the sides along with an interior clip for keeping keys and toys secure. Both bags include stroller straps and an adjustable shoulder strap can attach to either bag.

Skip Hop Duet Diaper Bag DuetInUse

Bottom line? This bag rocks. It’s large and in charge. I had it packed daily with diapers, the changing pad, a magazine, my personals, wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses, sunblock, tissues, hand sanitizer, snacks, toddler cup, and more. In addition to this, on top of everything, I would throw our large dry bag with a towel and swim gear for my son’s swim lessons. We took it to the beach and it easily held our extra layered clothes with the sand brushing right off of the bottom of the tote. It would be a great bag for two or more children, too. There were only two negatives to this bag from my point of view. One, it’s huge, so if you’re in the habit of throwing your keys in the bag and not being consistent with placement, they do tend to get lost easily. The second is that the fabric on the Crossbody bag is very plain. It doesn’t stand out on it’s own as anything noteworthy fashion-wise, but that can be easily overlooked due to its pack-ability.

Skip Hop Duet Diaper Bag

You can choose either Black or Taupe in the Duet. I absolutely love the lightness of Taupe for the summer, it’s simple and casual yet sophisticated. You can search all of Skip Hop’s diaper bag collection online; there is truly something for everyone!

This product was graciously provided to us by Skip Hop. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Coming Soon: What’s New from Mamas & Papas at ABC Kids Expo 2014

I looked for the perfect, reasonably priced, lightweight stroller for years, and now that I don’t need it anymore, I finally found the one I’ve always wanted (and lots more) at Mamas & Papas.

The Armadillo is an award winning stroller that is big on function but folds up small. I’m a fan, but now with the Armadillo Flip that can go forward or rear facing, I am 100% sold!

Mamas & Papas Armadillo Flip

The Armadillo City is even lighter (about 15 lbs) and extra slim. This is the lightweight no-nonsense version.

Mamas & Papas

The Special Edition Mamas & Papas strollers really caught my eye as well. This Urbo2 is a limited edition with a great triangle print.

Special Edition for Mamas & Papas

The Mamas & Papas Signature Edition features a cute doodle fabric and a fun yellow handle.

Mamas & Papas Signature Edition

The Special Edition Donna Wilson strollers aren’t new, but they’re still among my favorites. You can get an Urbo2 or Mylo2. Scroll down to see the matching diaper bag and you can purchase a matching toy as well!

Mamas & Papas Donna Wilson Urbo2 and Mylo2

This is another chic fabric coming out for the Urbo2– gotta love the tweed, and look out for other color options.

Mamas & Papas

I’m glad they’ve got a new neutral color for the Baby Bud Booster Seat

Mamas & Papas

…and their Babyplay 4-in-1 Tummy Time Play & Explore Playmat was one of my favorite infant playmats at the show.

Mamas & Papas

There are plenty of cute diaper bags from Mamas & Papas including ones that match the special edition strollers, but my favorites are the solid bags that unfortunately aren’t in the photo.

Overall, a great showing from Mamas & Papas.

Backpacks: Diaper Bag Trend and Back to School 2015 Preview from the ABC Kids Expo 2014

We just recently published our 2014 back to school backpack picks, but I’ve already found some front runners for next year’s backpack roundup.

First I’m excited about SoYoung‘s new designs.

SoYoung booth

One of my #1 things I look for in a kids backpack is where to put the lunchbox, and I love that some of SoYoung’s toddler bag lunchboxes can clip to the outside of the backpack if it’s too full inside.

SoYoung Backpack and lunchbox

They have several lunchbox styles like the regular lunch box (I love the sea designs),

SoYoung lunchboxes

cooler bags and the upright toddler lunchboxes.

SoYoung lunchboxes

This year they’ve also added their own sweat proof ice packs. I’m going to need some of these for our SoYoung lunchbox!  You can never have too many ice packs.

SoYoung ice packs

Milkdot is bound to get a slot or two on our back-to-school roundup next year. I especially like the bags on the right, and the Kawaii Pac mini backpacks are adorable.

milkdot booth

I’m really excited about us being able to get our hands on these lovely kids bags from Lassig. I hope to see these around the US before next school year begins. My favorites are on the top left.

Lassig Kids Bags

Finally, JJ Cole has really created a great toddler backpack. So many of them are too small to carry a folder for schoolwork but these are designed to be just large enough without being too big to carry independently.

JJ Cole toddler backpacks and lunchboxes

Some of the designs are a little too cartoony, but I really like the rocket and your child might have a favorite as well.

JJ Cole Toddler Backpacks

I also noticed that the backpack diaper bag is one of the hottest trends across almost all diaper bag brands. They’re so practical and now there are tons of attractive choices. Why have we resisted for so long?

Coming Soon: What’s New from Bugaboo at ABC Kids Expo 2014

There was lots of excitement going on at Bugaboo this year. The often imitated brand that revolutionized the modern stroller market, Bugaboo continues to forge ahead with both design and engineering.

On the design side, I’m going crazy for the first special edition stroller of Bugaboo’s three-year collaboration with Diesel. This first collection is the Bugaboo Cameleon3 by Diesel.

Bugaboo Diesel Cameleon

This military-inspired stroller comes complete with a dark green chassis, green canvas, faux leather handlebar and tons of distinctive details.

Bugaboo Diesel

This will be available in stores in November 2014. The stroller will retail for $1300. Camouflage footmuff, seat liner, parasol and mosquito net will also be available as additional accessories.

The next notable new product at Bugaboo was the Bugaboo Stand. Use your Bugaboo carriage as a bassinet or your Bugaboo seat as a high chair.

Bugaboo Stand  Bugaboo Stand Rear

The Bugaboo Stand weighs less than 6 pounds and folds easily into a shoulder carrying bag.

Bugaboo Stand carrying case

The stand is compatible with the Bugaboo Cameleon3, Bugaboo Buffalo, and Bugaboo Donkey using the required set of adapters. Expect to see the Bugaboo Stand in Spring 2015 for $130.

The really big announcement of the show was the Bugaboo Runner.

Bugaboo Runner

In a special evening event, Bugaboo presented the jogging extension that works for (almost) any Bugaboo model you buy or own. Just click your seat onto the specially designed chassis and you’re ready to run. This eliminates the need to purchase a separate jogging stroller. You can jog with your child front or rear facing.

Bugaboo Runner

The Bugaboo Runner will be available in the US starting in Spring 2015 and the jogging extension will retail for $425. You will also be able to purchase the complete runner (chassis, seat and seat adaptors) for $755.

Boken On-The-Go Hip Pack Diaper Bag Review

I am a huge fan of large diaper bags, so when I first heard about a diaper bag that can be worn as a fanny pack, I had to check it out regardless of size. The boken ON-THE-GO HIP PACK Diaper Bag is designed with an adjustable belt to be worn as a hip pack or over the shoulder as a sling bag. The compact shape and size allow it to be folded into itself in a zippered pocket for storage and travel.

The folded bag is portable and has a convenient loop for carrying or storing.

The adjustable hip pack/sling bag easily wipes clean, contains an outer zip pocket for bottles or pacifiers, a Velcro cell phone pocket, an inner zip pocket which doubles as the bag’s storage pouch, and this is all at the incredible light weight of 5.5 ounces!

The lightweight material is comfortable to wear around your waist and over your shoulder, even when loaded with a full water bottle. Rubberized zipper pulls are easy to use one-handed (a big pet peeve of mine with some diaper bags that are impossible to close without two hands!). During trips to the beach with my stroller, I hang the boken from our stroller handlebars, so it hangs out of the sunlight. It’s super easy to toss anywhere needed, from the car console, to the stroller basket on our umbrella stroller, to wearing around my waist or shoulder when we walk stroller-less on the beach collecting shells. Bonus — the sand and salt water is simple to clean out after each use!

A peek inside the boken hip pack/sling bag when we go to the beach. I always try to bring extra water because we never know how long we’ll end up walking the shore looking for sea creatures.

Here is everything I packed with me, sans keys, phone (taking the photo), and sunglasses, for the dinner and reception party last week celebrating my sister’s wedding. The outside phone pocket fit my iPhone 4S with case perfectly, but my husband’s iPhone 5 in an Otterbox was too large for the Velcro closure. We had to put it in the outside front zipper pocket instead. The bag rested on top of our umbrella stroller canopy (UPPAbaby G-LiTE) which was in the up position. Carrying a bag much smaller than my typical daily bags has allowed me to streamline what we bring to only the most-used, essential items.

My final thoughts?

This is one versatile little bag — and my husband loves it as well for it’s size and material. The only issue that I have had is that the zipper to the inside pocket, which also closes the pouch up when folded for storage, broke within the first few uses. The bag can still be used and folded just fine, and this may have just been an issue with my particular bag.  While the front outside pocket is designed for bottles (it is not insulated), the Born Free bottles that we used are too large, so you may also want to keep that in mind. I would love it if there could be a loop added to the bag while in use, so it can be hung on a hook or stroller handle easily. The outside pouch loop is great for storage, but an additional loop would be nice as well since I found myself looking for one frequently for some reason out of habit. Perhaps an ’80’s fanny pack flashback?

It is a surprising outcome that I find myself liking a smaller bag as much as I do. I definitely recommend the boken Hip Pack/Sling Bag as the perfect travel bag, beach bag, and on-the-go diaper bag, and at $34, you can afford to add this to your lifestyle.

You can pick one up today on their website in black, grass, or slate.

While boken was generous enough to offer us this bag for review, all thoughts, opinions, and recommendations are my own.
