Coming Soon: Furniture Finds from the ABC Kids Expo 2013

This is one of my FAVORITE posts in my ABC Kids Expo coverage each year.  I love to find new modern styles and options in out of the way corners.  It’s easy to find modern furniture in the “Modern Child” section, but brands with more traditional lines are increasingly testing out modern designs and I love to showcase them.

First, my mouth nearly dropped open when I spotted this spectacular collection from Capretti Design.  The quality of these is unmistakable.  This is some serious construction and craftsmanship– Amish made in the US– and it’s beautifully obvious when you see these in person.

They’re calling this their Mid-Century Collection and it’s solid Walnut finished in tung oil.  The crib retails for $2500 and the dresser is $3000.

Basically, I really just want this dresser in my bedroom asap!

Capretti Design’s Mid-Century Collection will be available in Sprout San Francisco locations (Manhattan, Chicago and San Francisco), Firefly Furnishings in Denver and Give Wink in the Miami area.  I may have to stop at Give Wink to get another look!

I stopped in to see what the Australian brand Boori is up to and I discovered Boori’s Urbane brand, featuring two great modern collections.  Omni includes a crib that converts into a twin size bed, a wardrobe and a dresser.

Lucia includes a crib that converts to a sofa, full bed conversion kit, dresser, wardrobe, changer and a bassinet.  The entire collection is available in white as shown or in espresso as well.

The Urbane collections are priced reasonably (Omni crib is about $600 and the Lucia crib is about $400) and are even Greenguard certified.

Next, at Childcraft, I noticed the Soho crib in this two-tone Oiled Oak / Putty combination.  This is a beauty for under $300.  I had to ask again whether that was the RETAIL price and they insisted it is.  So if this is what you’re looking for, just wait until February or March.

Here is another version of the Soho crib, which incidentally converts to a toddler bed, day bed and full bed.  The base on this version is a little different and I believe this one had plexiglass sides, which is kinda cool.  I recommended they do this crib in white as well.  We’ll see if they listen.

The Soho collection also includes a changing table, dressers, night stand and student desk.

Next, at Storkcraft, I discovered a collaboration between notNeutral and Zutano that has resulted in some really cool furniture.  The notNeutral BB2 Convertible Crib comes in this color combination as well as white/espresso and white/natural.

Here you have the Tivoli Convertible Crib and Changer and the 3-Drawer Dresser.  This will come in six color combinations which is good because this Expresso/Cloud combo is not my favorite.

I much preferred this Sunny / Natural combo that was on display at the Zutano booth.  Cool, right?

Finally, I couldn’t help but be taken in by the sleek minimalism at Quax.  This is not yet being distributed in the US but maybe they had some luck making contacts at the Expo.

What I really loved was how the crib converts into that awesome sofa down there.  DSC_1498

I predict we are going to be seeing more of this feet first changing position making its way into more US nurseries.  It really just makes more sense even though here it really blocks that top drawer.

The collection at Quax even included a toy box AND they make the plush toys and bedding shown in the display as well.

Coming Soon: What New From the Million Dollar Baby Family at ABC Kids Expo 2013

The MDB Family of brands had a really strong showing at ABC Kids Expo 2013.  With brands like Babyletto, Nursery Works (used to be one word- now it seems to be two), and Ubabub under its umbrella, they have a whole range of products for modern nursery furniture lovers across the board.

First from Nursery Works, the Vetro Crib looks better than ever in this gray Shadow Acrylic color.  While the completely clear one disappears a little too much, the Shadow Vetro is a dark crib with a nice level of transparency.

Nurseryworks Gray Vetro Crib

Nursery Works also showed off it’s Empire Rocker in this crazy custom camouflage fabric.  It’s a great reminder that any of their rockers can still be ordered with your custom fabric choices, but most importantly, notice that this isn’t actually a rocker!  You will be able to order replacement legs to change your rocker into a stationary chair.  This is a great way to extend the life of your furniture!  I believe the replacement legs will be about $200.

It’s always a pleasure to see the Ubabub pieces in person, but they also debuted the prototype of the Pod Dresser.  Designed to coordinate with the incredible Pod Cot, I hope to see a version of this available before too long!

Ubabub Pod Dresser

Babyletto is entering the world of toddler furniture in a big way next year.  With THREE new table and chair sets, they’re covering a range of modern styles.  I can’t decide which I like best.

No, I lied.  This Lemonade Playset is my favorite!

And it’s not just table and chair sets from Babyletto.  Their Skip toddler bed is really sweet.

I’m not sure how I feel about Babyletto’s new rocking chair.  Thoughts?

But I KNOW I love the Lolly Collection.

Finally, Babyletto is entering the textile business and I’m super impressed with the results.  Designed in-house, the top two designs on each side will be released first with the bottom patterns coming out further in the future.  You can also look for Pure Core and Coco Core non-toxic mattresses from Babyletto in 2014.  These will come in regular and mini crib sizes.

Last but not least, DaVinci’s ever-popular Jenny Lind crib will soon be available in this sunny yellow color.

Congratulations to the MDB Family on a great show.  To celebrate, they’re offering you 10% off any purchase on Babyletto.com from now through November 15th.  Unfortunately that won’t cover any of the new things here, but they do already have a great collection.

Aurora Contempo Collection From Arm’s Reach Concepts

Arm’s Reach Concepts is known almost exclusively for their line of co-sleepers.  While they are the experts when it comes to functional co-sleepers (bassinets that attach to the side of an adult bed), the designs of their products thus far haven’t been quite blog-worthy.  Coming next month however, ARC is branching out in the the world of nursery furnishings and their first collection, the Contempo Crib and Changing Dresser are worth sharing and taking a look at.

The Aurora Contempo Designer Crib can be pre-ordered now and is expected to ship in October.  It is a 4 in 1 convertible that transforms from crib to toddler bed, daybed and a full-size bed (with additional conversion kits).  This new crib retails for $726.

To round out your nursery set, the Aurora Contempo Changing Dresser is available for $526.  After diapering days are over, the changer makes a good bookshelf or TV stand and the changer can be reused as a coffee table tray.

I hope this new style transfers back to their co-sleeper line.  What do you think of the new pieces?

Wired Collection from Numi Numi Design

The Wired Collection is the much anticipated second modern nursery furniture set from Numi Numi Design.

Inspired by the skyline of New York City, the Wired Crib replaces the usual slats found on most cribs with a playful urban design.  While the form of the crib is evocative of modern architecture and technology, the bamboo finish is warm, natural and of course, eco-friendly.

The matching Wired Changing Table makes even better use of the beautiful bamboo.

Unique, eco-friendly, cutting edge design that is made in the USA is not cheap.  The Wired Crib is $1790 and the Changing Table is $1890. A Toddler Bed conversion is an additional $400.

As way of disclosure, I want to mention Numi Numi Design is one of our wonderful advertisers but you know I’d be sharing this set with you regardless!

Mercer Collection from Pottery Barn Kids

Every so often, Pottery Barn Kids comes up with something that fits on Buy Modern Baby and I’m always thrilled when that happens.  Any clean lined options that can be easily found by the masses are great in my book.

The new Mercer Collection from Pottery Barn kids is a nice, simple transitional style that can be styled in a modern way or the way they do it in their catalogs (heh).

The Mercer Crib retails for $800 but is now on sale for $700.

The Mercer Changing Table is $670 online.

Oeuf XL Changing Station

To go with their larger Merlin 6 Drawer Dresser, Oeuf is launching the XL Changing Station / Shelf.  $300

It’s not just the perfect changer with plenty of storage on your dresser top, but when you’re done with it, the changing stations mounts on the wall and becomes a display shelf.

I love anything that stretches the lifetime of these products and I applaud this creative thinking!

Now if only I could find something to do with our old Oeuf changing station.  While it was ideal while we needed it, it’s now been hanging around our house for the past 2 years…

MDB at ABC Kids Expo 2012

The MDB Family had one of the most impressive showings at the ABC Kids Expo this year.  With their diverse family of brands and lots of new nursery furniture collections, there was lots to see.

First from Nurseryworks, one of the most spectacular pieces at the show was this District Convertible Crib.  This particular one is made of reclaimed white oak so it’s gorgeous as well as green.

Nurseryworks also displayed a limited edition blue Vetro crib.

Babyletto had the Skip collection.  This is now my top favorite from Babyletto.

Even MDB’s DaVinci brand (which usually doesn’t quite fall into the modern nursery category) had a couple items that caught my attention.  I think their Highland Collection is a beautiful bridge between traditional and modern.  The straight lines make all the difference.

And the Jenny Lind Crib in blue is a fun modern twist on a traditional style.

Finally, MDB was debuting the Ubabub range of products.  As I’ve said, this Australian line is set to hit the US shortly and was getting a lot of attention.

So what do you think of MDB’s newest offerings?  Any favorites?

Launch of Numi Numi Design

We first introduced you to NUMI NUMI Design last year when we visited them at ABC Kids Expo 2011.  Now, they’ve officially launched their first modern nursery furniture line, the Funky Forest collection.

The collection is made in the USA using NAUF (no added urea formaldehyde) multi-ply birch wood and finished with non-toxic, water-based wood stains.

The Funky Forest Crib reflects the asymmetry and irregularity in nature.  $1490

The Funky Forest Changing Table features an integrated LED fixture that assists in nighttime diaper changes.  $1790

Two other NUMI NUMI Design nursery collections are expected next year (Seaweed is on the left and Wired on the right).

New Merlin Dresser From Oeuf

I never imagined that my life would include writing to tell thousands of people about a new dresser, but here we are, here it is, and this is the kind of stuff I get excited about these days.  The Merlin 3 Drawer Dresser is exactly what you’d hope for from Oeuf and is a gorgeous and perfect addition to their furniture line.

This piece is available now for $920.

Hopefully the 6 drawer version will be available soon as well.

In other important Oeuf news, the Robin Crib is on sale right now.  If an Oeuf crib is just outside your price range, maybe this will put it within reach for you.  How does $499 sound?

Numi Numi Design debut at ABC Kids Expo

I was looking forward to seeing the Funky Forest collection from Numi Numi Design at ABC Kids Expo.  I’m always excited to show you new modern nursery furniture designs, so take a look:

The really unique thing about the changer (in addition to the lit section!) is that the top section of the comes off to become the play table.

I look forward to seeing these available for purchase and to see the other collections (like Seaweed) brought to life.
