Rich or Reasonable: Giant Stuffed Giraffes

If your nursery or playroom requires a giant stuffed giraffe– and you may be surprised how often this is the case– I’ve got a couple options for you.  Unless you’re a serious Stieff collector and aficionado (I’m just a casual collector and fan), this one is a no-brainer though.

You don’t have to take my word for it.  Even celebrity nurseries are sporting Melissa & Doug’s Giant Stuffed Giraffe.

You can find it in Tori Spelling’s home

And Rachel Zoe’s home

So you can either be the trailblazer with the $1175 Giraffe from Steiff (43.31″ tall), or snag the Melissa and Doug one (57″ tall) on Amazon for less than $100. (at the time of posting, the price is $72.09!!)

Get the Look FOR LESS: Victoria’s Pink Nursery

Just one additional post about the nursery that Sissy + Marley did for Victoria.  The room of course is spectacular and it happens to come with a spectacular price tag to match.  Adding up just the sources I listed yesterday (not including the rug, books, wallpaper, snail from Australia and the cost of any other customization), the total of the items in the original picture is $9174.  This more economical version is about 70% less than the price of the original at a total of $2631.50!

1- Little Neon Bird Cage– $40
Pom Pom Organic Throw from PB Teen- $80 (same as expensive room)
2- Babyletto Kyoto Glider in Ecru- $700
Moroccan Contemporary Leather Ottoman– $135 (today on
Plush Snail Made to Order (custom color)- $16.50
3- Steiff Schana Swan (large)- $225
4- Thomas Paul Miss Kitty Pillow– $24
Ikea Expedit– $70 (same as expensive room)
Pandan Bins- Metallic– $24 each for 2+ (same as expensive room)
Japanese Wooden Gumball Machine– $52 (same as expensive room)
DwellStudio Bunny Push Toy (almost sold out)- $24 (same as expensive room)
DwellStudio Wooden Car Pink- $29 (same as expensive room)
Snail with Beech Ball (couldn’t find this anyplace else)- AU $22 (same as expensive room)
Zuny Series Elephant (Abby) Pink Animal Bookend– $55 (same as expensive room)
5- Baby S Pink Chair– $78 (I know it’s a knock-off, but we’re going for price here)
Malieg Mini Rabbit– $28 (same as expensive room)
6- Teodora Oval Frameless Mirror– $284 (sale price) it was tough to find a good replacement mirror!
7- Koppang 3 Drawer Chest from Ikea– $100 with a custom paint job.  Sorry for the DIY here!
Rag Dolls from Sandalias de Ana 1, 2, 3– $33.50 each
8- Geometric Landscape– $36
9- Happy Chic Bubble Table Lamps– $100 each (I couldn’t find a good sconce replacement, but these lamps look good)
Reclaimed Birdhouse in Raspberry Pink– $20 (or this is a great DIY opportunity- see inspiration here)
10- Sundvik Crib from Ikea- $120 (you could add some pink paint here too)
Charming Hamper (Dots/Pink)
– $89
Handmade Amish Rag Doll– $28.59

I kept some of the small, less expensive accessories the same, but you can always take some out to save additional $$.  Instead of the fabulous wallpaper, a coat of light pale paint would work beautifully.

The rug is a huge part of the impact of the original room, and while we haven’t calculated it into the design here, you’ve got to consider what you’re putting on the floor.  Here are a couple suggestions I found a Pottery Barn Kids.  Dhurrie Border Rug and Addison Rug

So what do you think?  Go all out in the original version?  Stick with the more reasonable options or would you mix and match?

Rich or Reasonable: Pico Pillows from Areaware or Laura Frisk Pillows

I was admiring the block printed animal pillows by Laura Frisk on etsy.  Her woodblock printed plush animal pillows are charming, fun and would go well in many-a-nursery. (Woodland Creatures Collection shown below)

As I looked at all the designs I was reminded of one of my favorite sources of animal pillows– the Fauna Pillows by Ross Menuez.  His photographic images are quite different from the block printed ones, but on a budget, Laura Frisk’s designs could be used for similar impact!

Fox Pico or Plush Fox Pillow in Yellow
Elephant Mini Cushion or Plush Elephant Pillow
Tabby Cat Mini Cushion or Orange Tabby Cat Throw Pillow

Rich or Reasonable: Rocking Sheep

For some reason, I’m a sucker when it comes to rocking toys, so cozy, fuzzy rocking sheep really get my attention.

On the left we have the Rocking Sheep designed by Povl Kjer that was available from Crafts Collection.  I can’t find any place where you can actually order this “rockin'” design, but according to the The Perfect Baby Handbook, it would have set you back $575.  I saw these in reports from ICFF years ago, but for $575, you can imagine why they weren’t more popular.

Inspired by Povl Kjer, Max Tyrie of Bright Spark Design on etsy came up with his own interpretation of the Rocking Sheep.  It might be a little less rock-n-roll, but this handmade in the USA sheep still rocks!  Each one is made to order out of Baltic birch plywood, some reclaimed scrap wood and real sheepskin.

For more of my favorite rocking toys, see my list in our modern toy guide.

Tree Bookcase: Nurseryworks vs. Babyletto

Earlier this year we were excited about Nurseryworks’ Tree Bookcase, and now I can show you a more budget friendly version, Babyletto’s Spruce Tree Bookcase.  It’s smaller, but so is the price!

Both are available in Green and White.  You can order the Nurseryworks Tree Bookcase today but you’ll have to wait until February 2012 for Babyletto’s version.

Rich or Reasonable: Rachel Zoe’s Nursery Style For Less

Last week I showed you sources for the item’s in Rachel Zoe’s son Skyler’s nursery.  If you add up just the items I listed (not including the art, sofa, and silver piggy bank ($1355)), your total would come out to $8262.

Fortunately, you really can replicate this same look for a lot less.

This version is $3600, less than half the price.

1- Babyletto Mercer 3 in 1 Convertible Crib with Toddler Rail, Espresso– $400

2- Oilo 3 Piece Crib Bedding Set (Cobblestone Motif – Taupe)– $399
Oilo Studio Taupe Band Throw Pillow– $49
Oilo Taupe Pillow– $59
Same as the original.  I couldn’t find anything similar enough and this is worth the splurge.

3- Schylling Metal Speedster– $85
Same as the original.  Not too expensive.

4- Lambs & Ivy Park Avenue Baby Blanket– $30

5- Large Standing Plush Giraffe– $19
The original wasn’t too expensive, but this one even more budget friendly though it’s also a little smaller.

6- Moroccan Pouf– $190

7- Cariboo Classic Bassinet– $400

8- Babyletto Modo 3 Drawer Changer in Espresso/White– $379

9- Oeuf Mini Library in Walnut– $660
Same as the original.  There’s nothing quite like the Oeuf library.

10- Babyletto Kyoto Glider– $679 and Kyoto Ottoman in Slate– $250

To finish off the room, add in your own tripod floor lamp and silver piggy bank.  My versions are rather reasonable.

Lamp- Contemporary Floor Lamp – Trident Collection Satin Steel Finish– $164

Bank- Made By Humans, Flying Piggy Bank, Silver– $14

Rich or Reasonable: Cloud Shelves

These cloud shelves would make for some really cute and creative wall decor.

The Cirrus Small Cloud Shelf (left) from iBride and designed by Benoit Convers is made of high pressure laminate.  It ships flat and it assembles as a puzzle.  It measures 27.5″ x 17.75″ x 8″.

The Cloud Shelf (right and pictured below) is a bit smaller, measuring 18″ x 8″ x 4″, but at 10% the price, I won’t complain.  You can order the Cloud Shelf from RoomMates through our affiliate link. (found via ohdeedoh)

Hang it with some White Clouds Wall Decals and you’ve got a really cute arrangement.

Through May 31, buy the Cloud Shelf and White Clouds decals from RoomMates to get 20% off the decals with coupon code “CLOUDBUNDLE”!

Rich or Reasonable: Upholstered Child Sized Chair

I was tempted to buy an orange Ava Toddler Chair from Jennifer Delonge for half price once, but that little beauty stayed at the store.  I still think about it.  I think that means I should have gotten it.

The Jennifer Delonge Toddler Chair and slightly larger Child Chair are not only expensive (price depends on the size and fabric), but they’re hard to find, so if you happen to be looking for a pink one, you might consider the Skyline Furniture Kid’s Modern Chair as an alternative.  If pink doesn’t work for you, consider splurging!
