My Modern Nursery: The Baby’s Big Boy Room

Before you know it, the baby has grown out of his perfect nursery and you have to move him on to a big boy room.  This was so hard for me and while I put it off as long as I could, we finally made the transition at the beginning of the year.  Even though this isn’t a nursery, you can easily turn this space back by simply changing out the bed for a crib.  I though this worth sharing to show how the design boards translate into a real space, plus I’m excited to share the photos of how his room turned out!

Nuggie's Room

1- I collected decor and pieces from some of my favorite artists and designers–
March Owl Illustration from Gingiber (similar)
Cool Cool Clock from Little Nest- $150
Lovely, Love My Family Print in Yellow from Tuesday Morning- $25
You Are My Sunshine from Petit Collage
2-  Here in Florida, fans in the bedroom are pretty much a necessity, so we forego the fancy light fixture for the most stylish fan we can find. The Minka-AireConcept II Flush Mount Ceiling Fan ($270) fit the bill.
3- I love the Magnetic World Puzzle English Edition from Janod as art as well as a toy- $45
4- Light Bulb Garlands from Oeuf- $64
5- Just because it was time to get rid of our Oeuf crib didn’t mean I wanted to quit Oeuf, so my furniture choice was a no-brainer.  I went with the Merlin Three Drawer Dresser and
6- a Sparrow Twin Bed and Nightstand.  The Tulip Lamp was a vintage find on Fab.com and I adore it.
7- I picked the Sailor Yellow Sheets as well as the Regatta Yellow Sheets from Unison. They also come in crib sizes.  I like to mix and match the narrower stripes with the wider ones.
8- Pierre the Bunny from blabla kids is a perfect companion for any child, mine included- $56
9- Herman is a sweet plush owl from Sleepy King and is a treasure.
10- We used the same rug we had in the nursery.  It was from Ikea several years ago.  Even though we’ve changed the colors of the room, the rug still works perfectly.
Finally, the Monte Como Glider is one of the most comfortable and beautiful seats ever.  Just because you don’t have a baby to rock doesn’t mean you have to give up a great spot to sit while in their room.

As I planned the space, I used Pinterest to collect all my ideas and you can see more there.  I finally put the final item in last week and so I just have to tidy up.  Soon I’ll post photos of the room all finished!

Sebastian’s Black and White Room as a Nursery

You’ve been drooling over the latest SISSY + MARLEY project all weekend, and now I’m going to let you know where to find all the cuteness to use in your own homes.  Sebastian’s big boy room is a beautifully put together black and white modern space for a growing little boy, but the design can easily be adapted for use as a nursery.

SISSY + MARLEY black and white nursery

1- The Kids poster by MiniWilla (sold out)
Don’t Grow Up art print from the birth of cool prints- $15+
2- LEGO Kids’ 9005718 Super Heroes Batman Alarm Clock- $30
Panda Bear from Colette Bream- $54
3- Lucky Star wallpaper by SISSY + MARLEY for Jill Malek
4- Large Frame Light from Iacoli & McAllister- $595
Cat Girl from burntfeather- $28
LEGO Storage Head Small, Skeleton Face- $25
5- Half Moon Basket from Ferm Living- $80
6- Campaign II Painted Crib from ducduc- $1800
Blah Blah Large Throw from Donna Wilson- $300
7- Cloud Pillow from Colette Bream- $68
Mayfair Steamer Trunk Chest from Restoration Hardware- $2600
8- Monte Joya Rocker- $995
Componibili Round Storage Modules by Kartell- $140
9- Olin Black Rug- $300
Giant Lego Brick 2×4- $35
10- Balthazar from Lucky Boy Sunday- $120
Pale Nulle from Lucky Boy Sunday- $138

The desk in Sebastian’s room is the Micke desk from Ikea, a steal for $50.  It’s paired with a stylish black Panton chair ($310) in black.  For the nursery version I used a Monte Joya rocker instead of the desk and chair combo.

The Bed in the big boy version is a Campaign Youth Bed from ducduc, so we just used the Campaign II Crib instead.

The mustache poster is from MiniWilla though I can’t find that exact one anywhere (similar), and the lightning bolt was handmade by Sebastian’s nonna.

The Don’t Grow Up print is from the birth of cool (left), but it’s very similar to this Don’t Grow Up Poster from Mini and Maximus (right).

hmmm2...

Same with the Cat Girl print from burntfeather (left).  It’s very like the Bandit Girl poster from Mini and Maximus (right).  Just an FYI.  I believe burntfeather worked with Mini and Maximus on this.

Hmmm...

I’m just getting started with this black and white stuff!

My Modern Nursery #84: Gray, Pink and Yellow Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

We’re so happy to continue our nursery board series with Lullaby Paints this year, but we’re doing it a little differently this time!  While we’re still starting with ultra-safe, eco-friendly paint from Lullaby Paints, this time we’ve been using Pinterest boards to collect sources and inspiration as we work to develop the final product below.  I really hope you’ve been following along this month as this Gray, Pink & Yellow Nursery Design came together.

This month we chose a medium shade of gray called Pewter.  It’s part of the color collection created exclusively for Wayfair.com.  Gray is THE hottest color for modern nurseries and Pewter is dark enough to be a bold choice but light enough to not make the room look gloomy.  With bright pink and yellow accents and white furnishings, this room is anything but dark.

MyModernNursery84

1- Alphabet Geometric Art Print from MademoiselleYo- $15
2- Jonathan Chevron Pendant from Stray Dog Designs- $985
3- Pewter by Lullaby Paints- $75 a gallon
Wild One Canvas Banner from Sharp Tooth Studio- $45
4- Birthday Mobile- $71
Oeuf Rhea Crib
- $670
5- Pigeon Lamp- $200
Mandal Dresser from Ikea- $300
6- Ferm Living Half Moon Laundry Basket- $115
7- Mick Yellow Floor Lamp from Crate & Barrel- $150
Cambridge Light Pink / Ivory Rug 8′ x 10′- $290
8- Ferm Living Black Stripe Cushion- $82
Ferm Living Black Mini Triangle Cushion
- $82
9- Rocker Arm Shell in Magenta from Modernica- $435
Knitted Yellow Pouf from CB2- $80
10- Jealous Baby from Lucky Boy Sunday- $122

If you’re feeling this color scheme here but don’t love all the items we’ve chosen, one of the great things about our Pinterest board is that we’ve saved all the other options we considered there for you.  There are alternate furnishings, lights, hampers, rugs, toys, art etc…

Thanks as always to Lullaby Paints for sponsoring our nursery board series.  Safe for baby and the environment, Lullaby Paints are the perfect choice for your modern nursery.  For more nursery color inspiration, follow Lullaby Paints on Pinterest, and keep a lookout for next month’s new board!

My Modern Nursery #82: Jessica’s Nursery for Baby #2!

As a second-time mom expecting baby boy number two in early June, I knew that I wanted to come up with a beautiful nursery design again. But this time, the focus was on simple, modern design with strong organization and a very comfortable chair.

I now know how quickly children grow and realize that I’ll be transitioning baby into a big boy bed sooner than I can imagine. I chose a color palette of a soft teal/aqua paired with all sorts of neutrals. Black, white and grey make up most of our accent colors, but I’m adding a bit of yellow as well. I think I’ll be able to easily create a big-boy room in a year or two with this base. After changing the room design multiple times, I went back to my roots. I love clean modern design with just a touch of whimsy. Fun throw pillows and a great mobile add just the right amount of sweetness to an otherwise industrial modern style room.

The DwellStudio Myles glider was a steal at $350 on Craigslist including the ottoman. I found it new from a local boutique children’s shop called Creative Kid Stuff. I made this room a budget friendly room by repurposing our crib with a fresh coat of paint on the bottom, using a lot of standout IKEA pieces and finding fun inexpensive wall art.

My Modern Nursery #81: Kenzie Sponsored by Modified Tot

When designing your nursery, you’ve got to pick a piece or two to serve as inspiration and the spring board from which to start making choices.  I usually like to use the most colorful pieces as my spring board.  This is often art, a rug, or as in the case of my own child’s nursery, the bedding.

If you’re looking for colorful combinations of modern patterns for your nursery bedding, I recommend browsing the set offered by our sponsor, Modified Tot.  One of my favorite Mod Tot Exclusive designs is the Kenzie collection.  I love the coral, aqua and pink combination and I particularly like the Triangles fabric pattern.  I think Kenzie was a great inspiration for this modern feminine nursery board.
