My Modern Nursery #121: Sleep Like a Tiger Nursery Inspiration Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

To kick off the summer, I was inspired by the beautiful painted colors and rich patterns and textures in Mary Logue’s Sleep Like a Tiger, with illustrations by Pamela Zagarenski. In this sweet bedtime tale, a little girl, who isn’t tired, learns that all the animals need to sleep, even little girls.

The girl’s parent teach her all about the sleeping animals, and in the end, the girls takes the lessons she’s learned and is able to fall asleep on her own.

I used some of the details from the book like the tiger and the crowns, and then layered colors and textures over neutral furnishings and Island Sand Paint. For ever more texture, you could stencil over the walls or layer on a pattern of wall decals.

My Modern Nursery #120: The House in the Night Inspiration Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

For this month I was inspired by the soothing poetry of Susan Swanson and etched illustrations of Beth Krommes in the Caldecott award winning picture book, “The House in the Night.” Even in the darkness, the light shines through this soothing bedtime story.

The_House_in_the_Night

In only black, white and yellow, the images are rich and textured. Even though the pages are mostly black, a light glows through it all and there’s nothing to fear in the night.

With Perfect Gray walls, I’ve made the room a bit lighter than the book but used similar dark tones with yellow accents. There’s nothing to fear at bedtime in this glowing modern nursery.

My Modern Nursery #119: Miss Rumphius Nursery Inspiration Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

My newest nursery nursery series sponsored by Lullaby Paints is inspired by the art and illustrations of some of my favorite children’s books. The first title I selected is Miss Rumphius, written and illustrated by Barbara Cooney. Cooney paints an inspirational tale of a woman, who after a full life of work, adventure and travel, finds a way to make a lasting mark by making the world a more beautiful place.

With a subtly colorful palette, the atmosphere of the book is warm and lush and rich. You can feel warm sunshine, cool breezes and smell the lupine fragrance in the air.

We’ve captured the colors of the book in this sweet nursery space and infused it with the spirit Miss Rumphius’s adventures. Miss Rumphius made the world more beautiful, and you can start baby off in a beautiful environment of her own.

My Modern Nursery #118: Green Gone Wild Inspiration Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

We’ve had a great time this month exploring how to use Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2017 in the modern nursery so of course I had to try Greenery out as a wall color in preparation for the new year. I look forward to adding a lot more green into my own home this coming year and so far I’m off to a great start with new house plants!

Lullaby Paints has a custom wall color option that allows you to specify any paint shade while still enjoying non-toxic Lullaby Paints and avoiding dangerous chemicals, so it’s easy to match any Pantone shade. This year however, I found that Lullaby Paint’s Green Gone Wild was remarkably close to “Greenery”– so close that I’ve found representations of Greenery” that are further off from each other than from the shade I’ve chosen below.

Do not be scared to try a rich green shade on the walls.  I’ve had a bright green room for one of my kids and loved it the entire 7 years we lived in the house. If such a saturated color seems overwhelming, try painting just one accent wall. Remember that kids will outgrow the nursery after just a few short years so it’s a great place to have a lot more fun with the decorating! You can always change things up as the kids get older.

My Modern Nursery #117: Punky Pink Nursery Inspiration Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

I had a request this month to do a deep, warm red shade as the background for the nursery. It seems to be the big color this season in fashion and furnishings so it seemed perfect. Looking back through past boards I found one that I had already done in a dark red or maroon shade, so not to repeat myself, I looked for a slightly brighter tone. I found Punky Pink, a beautiful berry color from Lullaby Paints. I took a cue from the name and added lots of wild funky color and graphics. I was thinking less punk rock and more Punky Brewster. Who’s a fan?

My Modern Nursery #116: Cozy Luna Moon Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

After a few months of colorful nursery designs, I was feeling a cozy neutral for fall. You may have noticed that the overwhelming predominance of gray interiors over the last few years is giving way to a resurgence of cream and off whites. If you haven’t noticed yet, keep watching.

Browsing through the neutral paint colors at Lullaby Paints, I loved the subtle moonlit glow of Luna Moon, a light gray mixed with a touch of yellow. The trick to layering neutrals is adding lots of texture, and I think we’ve accomplished that.

My Modern Nursery #114: Violet Pearl Pastel Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

I have to admit that purple walls are tricky. As the mother of boys, pink was a challenge I had to learn to overcome, but purple is an even more difficult proposition. Now Lullaby Paints has many shades of purple, but I was looking for a light shade with a little more pink in it than blue. Violet Pearl is just on the purple side of neutral but for this board it became the boldest color in the palette. The room is so neutral that you could really pick YOUR favorite shade of Lullaby Paint and with a new rug and piece of art, you’d still have a perfect nursery.

My Modern Nursery #113: Golden Glow Yellow Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

After more than thirty nursery boards where I’ve used Lullaby Paints colors as the backdrop, I was starting to worry that I had chosen all my favorite shades of wall paint. Of course there were a few more colors that would be perfect for use on accent furniture pieces, but I wasn’t sure how many more colors were left to use for nursery inspiration. Of course you can always color match from other brands to create your favorite zero VOC paint, but you can imagine my delight then when Lullaby Paints updated their site, adding hundreds of new shades to their shop!

It was time to do another yellow nursery and instead of a handful of options, I found…

Lullaby Paints yellow choices

I was looking for a medium (not too light nor too dark), rich (but slightly muted) yellow that would create a cozy, modern atmosphere. I think Golden Glow is a perfect shade for anyone brave enough to go beyond the pale, so to speak, when it comes to yellow.

My Modern Nursery #112: Army Blanket Brown Nursery Inspiration Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

I have found my new favorite neutral. Not everything has to be gray, but we’re not ready to embrace beige (and I hope we never are), so instead I’ve discovered that a deeper, earthy brown like Army Blanket Brown can become a perfect, cozy backdrop. I played around with so many color schemes that would have worked incredibly well with this shade of brown, from bold and bright color blocks to modern and minty pastels, but really fell for this neutral combination with warm gold and wood tones.
