My Modern Nursery #109: Citron Nursery Inspiration Sponsored by Lullaby Paints

I was looking for a shade of green from Lullaby Paints for our first nursery board of the spring and from the swatches on their website, Citron jumped out at me. You might be intimidated by this bright, bold green but I did my son’s toddler room with a similar shade so I know from experience that with enough light and white in the room, it’s a very livable and pleasant color!

The only problem I had with Citron was that on different websites, the color looked very different so I wasn’t sure exactly which shade I’d be working with. This can happen a lot when looking at colors on your computer monitor, so before you ever finalize your paint choices, get an actual sample and try it in the space where you’ll be using it. This is the only accurate way to find out how a paint shade will look under the lighting conditions in your home.

Best Modern Mobiles 2013: Sponsored by Babyli.st

There is no one right answer to the best mobile question.   Though there are options that are supposed to be good for capturing baby’s attention and promoting brain development, mobiles are more decorative than functional.  Some are battery operated and play music, spin or light up.  I have nothing against those and reluctantly admit that we had one of those gadgety gizmos, but currently, there aren’t any on the market that I’d feel good about recommending.  If that changes, I’ll let you know!

For now, think of your nursery mobile as a floating piece of artwork for your modern nursery.  You can hang one in a corner, over the changing table, or over the crib, but wherever you put it, make sure you hang it out of baby’s reach.

As part of our baby registry series sponsored by Babylist, I’m sharing my top 10 favorite sources (in no particular order) for modern mobiles.  With just these 10 brands, you’ll have an incredible selection of gorgeous modern mobiles.  Pick your favorite and add it to your baby registry!

Top 10 Modern Crib Mobiles 2013

1- Themis Mobiles from Artenica Designed by Clara von Zweigbergk, the Themis Mobiles are colorful, geometric and appropriate for the coolest modern nurseries.  These retail for approximately $40.

2- Baby Jives
Handcrafted heirloom mobiles, these bird, boat, butterfly, cloud, fish and plane mobiles are truly works of art.  Baby Jives creations retail for about $30 to $200 depending on the size.

3- Frazier + Wing
These paper mobiles are crafted by hand in a multitude of color combinations.  Frazier + Wing mobiles retail for $68 to $150.

4- Djeco
Djeco mobiles are made in France of colorful die-cut plastic shapes.  They retail for about $22 to $42.

5- Petit Collage
With paper and bamboo mobiles that cover all the most popular nursery themes (birds, butterflies, farm, elephant, woodland, fish owls, transportation…), Petit Collage is a perfect addition to almost any modern nursery.  The mobiles retail for $15 to $66.

6- Flensted
If you can’t find a Flensted mobile to love, you don’t know what you’re looking for.  Flensted has been around almost 60 years and has the largest assortment of modern mobile designs ranging from abstract to adorable.  Some are cardboard and some are serigraphical foil.  These retail for about $30 to $80.

7- Adrift Mobiles
From Schmitt Design, these abstract sculptural mobiles are as appropriate in any part of your home as they are in the nursery.  Adrift mobiles range from $90 to $250.

8- Wee Gallery
Wee Gallery mobile designs emphasis high contrast and most are created to have an interesting view from below (which is presumably baby’s point of view).  These retail for $12 to $26.

9- IGE
IGE mobiles are laser cut designs using museum board, plywood or plexiglass.  I like the plywood birds and monkeys best.  But take a look at the owl and black silhouettes as well.  They retail for $55 to $65.

10- KLT: works
Cute plush mobiles are handmade in Washington and retail for $85 to $180.  Designs include cute animals like birds, kitties, woodland creatures and even bugs!

If you’re still looking for the perfect mobile and haven’t found it yet, etsy is the next place to find tons more styles and options.

Which room would you go for– the original, the less expensive one or a combination of the two?  Where would you splurge and where might you save?

Emerald: Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2013

If we can judge a year by its color, 2013 is going to be the best year yet.  With Emerald as my birthstone, I love this radiant and rich shade as predictor of the color trend for the coming year.  While I would probably gravitate to a darker emerald (the way I like my stones), 17-5641 is a versatile and easy to use shade of green.  Somewhere between a pastel and forest green, it’s gender neutral, natural and elegant.

Here are a few ways to introduce the 2013 color of the year into your home.

1- Offi EVA Foam Chairs in Blue and Green– $199
2- Kale Kauzebot– $25
3- Twinkle Living Necklace Throw Pillow– $58
4- Artecnica Themis Prism– $40
5- Bugaboo Bee Stroller and Canopy – Special Edition-Jade Green– $660
