What Did You Buy New For Baby #2

I have two little boys and my sister-in-law is about to have her second, so I’m thinking about hand-me-downs.  When my second was born, there were many people asking what that could buy for him.  I had a lot of trouble coming up with any suggestions because we already had everything we needed for a little boy.  I was actually happy to have the chance to get more use out of the things that we had in the house.

We reused the bathtub, the crib, the clothes, stroller, glider… everything, really!  There were family members who complained that baby #2 should enjoy new things all of their own, and while I wanted to celebrate #2 just as much as #1, it didn’t make sense to me to re-purchase things that we already owned.

The question is constantly revisited during the holidays when people are thinking about what to buy for my boys.  Since my oldest already has all the best toys, what is there left to buy for the little one?

So I put the question out to the rest of you…

What did (or will) you buy new for baby #2?

They Posted These So I Don’t Have To

These are some of my favorite posts from around the web over the past week or so.

Lauren of with two cats has been working on the design for her daughter Violet’s Big Girl Room.  I love the update on the room’s progress and can’t wait to see it when it’s all done.  Aren’t the colors pretty?!

If you’re still shopping for gifts, try the selection of Handmade Dolls for the Holidays on Small for Big.  So many precious choices.  A lot of love goes into making beautiful dolls like these.

I spotted this colorful calendar in a colorful year… on Oh Joy!  Wouldn’t it be a great collection of colors for the nursery of a January baby?

If you’re at all interested in a black and white nursery, or just a way to use the black and white Missoni crib set from Target, look no further than this Black and White Circus Nursery on Look at the Birdie and Smile.

Finally, Holly posted about Dottir & Sonur on decor8 this week and I love everything on their website.  The origami pattern is particularly fresh and fun.  I can’t wait until these are available in stores.  I’ll keep you posted.

Hope you’re having a great weekend.  The holiday parties are starting so it’s an exciting time of year around here.  If you have a few moments while you’re finishing your online shopping, please share your feedback about BuyModernBaby in our annual reader poll.  It should take less than 5 minutes as there are only 10 questions.  Thanks for reading and I hope to bring you more of what you love in 2012!

Real Room Tour: The Suburban Urbanist Strikes Again

Inspired in part by the nursery that Lindsay Brier, designer and owner of Anyon Interior Design, designed for her son…

…Jenna Halverson, of The Suburban Urbanist,  put together this inspiration board for a nursery for her dear friends.

We’ve previously shown you Jenna’s Gender Neutral Lion’s Den and I’m so happy that she was able to put her skills to good use yet again.  With some input from the parents-to-be, Jenna helped put this amazing nursery together for them.  Take a look at the final results….

You can see the gray and white stripes used here to great effect and a little color added with the turquoise rug, painted furnishings and accessories.

I also like the little pops of red that show up here and there.

For more information about this space and product sources, visit the nursery reveal post on The Suburban Urbanist.  The room looks so chic and expensive, but you’ll be surprised at how reasonably they were able to achieve this look.  Thanks Jenna for allowing me to share your photos and congratulations to the Whetstine’s!

(If you would like me to feature your nursery here as well, please drop a line to esther@buymodernbaby.com)

Zig Zag Gray Baby Bedding from New Arrivals, Inc.

I have to share a new arrival from New Arrivals, Inc. (heh heh) because I know that so many of you are looking for gray bedding.  Add the zig zag to the mix and this is a hot item.

Zig Zag Baby Bedding is $428 for a 3 piece set.  You can also purchase the items a-la-carte, so the sheet ($68) and skirt ($100) together are $168– which isn’t too bad.

update 12/16: Nursery Notations is hosting a New Arrivals Inc. giveaway this week!  Win a $100 gift certificate.  The winner will be chosen this Sunday so go now!

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams… for Kids?!

Some companies make beautiful furniture for kids.  Some make their beautiful furniture smaller for kids.  Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams (one of my favorites for grown-up furniture) have a collection of mini chairs sized just for kids.  This is for when you really want the kids’ furniture to blend in with the decor.

Clockwise from the left we have the Luc Kids Chair ($595), Lil’ Alexa Kids Chair ($575), and Mini Sadie ($445).  The chairs in the photo can be ordered online as shown.  You can also special order the chairs to your own specifications or in leather through a Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams retailer.

Petit Collage Giveaway Winner!

Petit Collage has been a long time favorite on BuyModernBaby so I was very excited to do this giveaway and share one of their new Modern Dolls with you!

The winner of their choice of a Petit Collage Modern Doll is Jessica who chose the Sweet Pea Doll!  Congratulations Jessica!  I can’t wait to hear how your little sweet pea likes it.

The home of Petit Collage’s Founder was featured in the November 2011 Dwell magazine and I love seeing so many of their designs (including a Sweet Pea doll!) in their nursery.  It all looks so lovely together.

You can see more photos of the home on Petit Collage’s Blog.  Follow Petit Collage on twitter and facebook to keep up with their latest news.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Happy Holidays Giveaway 2011.  I had a great time sharing some of my favorite gift picks with you.  Happy Holidays!!

DwellStudio Giveaway Winner!

It’s been fun hearing what DwellStudio goodies are going on your wishlists.  I’m pretty sure that my big gift to myself will be some drapes in DwellStudio Oversize Stripe Charcoal fabric.  Really excited!!

And I’m excited to announce the giveaway winner as well.  The winner of the new Toucan Wooden Puzzle, Woodland Wooden Puzzle and Woodland Memory Game is….. BusyWorkingMama!

Congratulations BusyWorkingMama!  Thanks to all who entered and to DwellStudio for working with me on this great holiday gift giveaway.  All of their toys make incredible gifts.

In addition to the three we picked for the giveaway, you have to take a look at the new Zoo Shape Sorter, Knit Blocks and Puzzle Blocks.

There are also three cute new push toys, the Dino, Giraffe and Bunny that also make great decor pieces.

DwellStudio stamp sets are lots of fun and the new Owl Stamp Set is no exception.

They are all such beautiful additions to the DwellStudio collection.  I hope many of you enjoy DwellStudio gifts under the tree this year!  For DwellStudio updates, follow them on facebook and twitter.

Skip Hop Giveaway Winner!

With Skip Hop’s bath line, bath time will never be the same.  Their bath line more than doubled this year with new items like the Starfish Stay Stay-Put StackerOctopus Ring TossTurtle Island Playset and Soapster Foaming Soap Dispenser.

And the winner of all four of these wonderful new items is Lace who also discovered the Skip Hop Spout Covers and loves them!  Congratulations Lace!

There are two other new bath accessories in the collection (which some of you have already commented about): The Moby Bath Kneeler and the Moby Bath Spout Cover.  The Moby spout cover joins the Ducky spout cover so I’m going to venture to guess that we’ll see a Ducky Bath Kneeler eventually.  I’m just speculating though.

I also have to mention that just last week, the new Skip Hop diaper bags I told you about were released!  That’s right, you can now order your Jonathan Adler <3 Skip Hop Diaper Bags!

And your Skip Hop update would not be complete if I didn’t let you know that the Complete Sheets are on the Skip Hop website and should be shipping any day now!  The Complete Sheet features a different design on the top and on the sides of the sheet so that you can enjoy all the designer fun without the risk associated with crib bumpers.

My two favorites designs are Chocolate Lattice and Mod Dot.

I have a feeling we are going to see a lot of copycats of this idea in the years ahead, but for now, Skip Hop is blazing the trail and I’m excited and impressed.

Thanks to Skip Hop for this wonderful giveaway and for your constant creativity and innovation!  Follow them on twitter and facebook for the latest updates.
